Albion History
Albion, Idaho, was established in the early 1870s during the westward expansion of the United States. Initially founded as a ranching community, the town quickly became a significant settlement in the region due to its strategic location near the Oregon Trail. The fertile soil of the Albion Valley attracted farmers, while the nearby mountains provided ample resources for mining and logging. By 1879, Albion had grown sufficiently to become the county seat of Cassia County, solidifying its importance as a regional hub.
One of the most notable developments in Albion’s early history was the establishment of the Albion State Normal School in 1893. The school was one of the first institutions of higher education in Idaho, created to train teachers for the rapidly growing state. The Normal School brought a wave of students, educators, and infrastructure, boosting the town’s economy and cultural life. Albion thrived as an educational center until the school’s closure in 1951, which marked a significant turning point in the town’s history.
